Survey finds more Americans back China over US in AI leadership
Pew Research Centre data shows 36.0% of Americans think China is more advanced in AI, versus 12.0% for the US, with views split across party lines.
More than one-third of Americans view China as the global leader in artificial intelligence, according to a Pew Research Centre survey released this week, as US President Donald Trump said AI will be on the agenda for his Chinese counterpart’s visit later this year. The survey found that 36.0% of Americans believe China is more advanced than the United States in developing AI, while 12.0% say the US is leading, and 18.0% rate the two countries as equally advanced. Another 33.0% were unsure which nation is ahead.
The perception cuts across party lines, SCMP Economy reported. Among Republicans, 30.0% said China is ahead, compared with 43.0% of Democrats, and Republicans were more likely than Democrats to say the US leads on AI, with 17.0% of Republicans holding that view versus 9.0% of Democrats.
The findings come as the US and China compete in an accelerating AI race, a backdrop that the report links to US anxieties about China eroding America’s technological edge. SCMP Economy also noted concerns that China is leveraging major companies and accessing restricted advanced semiconductor chips.
