Solar lifts New York ISO supply, trimming midday metered electricity demand
EIA data show the dip in midday metered demand is most noticeable in early spring, when solar output has an outsized impact as load is lower.
An increase in electricity generation from small-scale solar in New York has reduced the midday demand for metered electricity in the New York ISO, according to data cited by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).
EIA said the shift is occurring amid an overall decline in state electricity load, with solar generation specifically weighing on metered demand during the middle of the day.
The EIA noted the pattern is most pronounced in early spring, especially in March and April, when demand is lower and solar generation conditions are favorable.
As a result, metered electricity demand falls during midday periods even as total generation is supported by distributed solar output.
