Trump threatens EU tariffs over Alphabet Google fine
The threat follows Trump’s earlier move to impose at least 10% duties on imports from about 60 trading partners, including the EU.
US President Donald Trump threatened new tariffs on products from the European Union in retaliation for a 1 billion US dollar, approximately 890 million euro fine imposed on Alphabet’s Google, according to SCMP Economy.
In a social media post, Trump said the US would launch a trade investigation into what he described as the practice of “robbing” American companies and, in turn, the American taxpayer, and he added that any penalties would be reversed with a substantial tariff placed at the earliest possible moment.
SCMP Economy notes the president has repeatedly floated tariff threats against major US trading partners, sometimes implementing them and sometimes backing down from others.
The latest move comes after Trump decided to impose duties of at least 10% on products from around 60 trading partners, including the EU, tying the action to a goal of limiting goods made with forced labor.
