U.S. refining capacity fell in 2025 to 18.2 million bpd

Operable atmospheric distillation capacity totaled 18.2 million barrels per calendar day on January 1, 2026, down more than 250,000 bpd, or about 1%, from a year earlier.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration said U.S. operable atmospheric distillation capacity, a primary measure of refinery capacity, totaled 18.2 million barrels per calendar day on January 1, 2026.

EIA estimated that level was down over 250,000 barrels per calendar day, about 1%, compared with January 1, 2025, based on its latest annual Refinery Capacity Report.
