China advances plan to use AI across nuclear energy lifecycle

The ADANES concept is presented as a way to shift nuclear safety logic, using AI to monitor signals and help trigger early shutdown during abnormal events.

OilPrice reports that researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences outlined a new approach to integrate artificial intelligence across the nuclear energy lifecycle at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.

The plan, called ADANES, is an Accelerator-Driven Advanced Nuclear Energy System concept that the outlet says would fundamentally change the safety logic used in conventional nuclear reactors.

OilPrice also notes the motivation for the effort: while nuclear disasters are historically rare, the potential consequences are described as massive, and AI is positioned as a tool that can process large volumes of operational signals and support shutdown in the earliest stages of an incident.

The piece further attributes to Wang Shoujun, president of the Chinese Nuclear Society, the view that large language models across sectors, including nuclear energy, are inevitable, and that ADANES aims to get ahead of that trend by focusing on safety.
