Mitsubishi Heavy to set Japan base for next-gen fighter jet program

Japanese engineers plan to set up the development and assembly center at Mitsubishi Heavy’s Komaki South plant in Aichi Prefecture by the end of 2026.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is expected to establish the Japan hub for the development and assembly of a next generation fighter jet for the Japan, Britain and Italy trilateral Global Combat Air Program, according to sources cited by SCMP Economy.

The Japanese center is set to be located at Mitsubishi Heavy’s Komaki South plant in Aichi Prefecture, with British engineers already working on the aircraft’s design at the site, SCMP Economy reported.

Britain plans to set up its center in Warton and Italy in Turin, with the three countries discussing their roles across the jet’s design and manufacture, the outlet said.

The program was agreed in 2022 and aims to begin deploying the fighter jet in 2035 amid a more tense global security environment, SCMP Economy added. Canada has joined as the first observer, while Germany and Australia have expressed interest in participating.
