PLA helicopter lingers near Taiwan, raising concerns of new drills

Taiwan detected four PLA aircraft on July 20-21, including a helicopter and a UAV that stayed in the R9 restricted area for nearly 9.5 hours.

SCMP Economy reports that Taiwan’s defence ministry detected four People’s Liberation Army aircraft, including a helicopter and a UAV, operating around the island on July 20 and into the following morning.

The helicopter and drone crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, which Taiwan treats as an unofficial boundary, and remained east of it for nearly 9.5 hours in the “R9” area that Taiwan has designated as restricted, marking the first publicly reported case of a PLA helicopter lingering there for an extended period.

Taiwan said it closely monitored the aircraft using joint intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets and responded appropriately.

Military analysts cited by SCMP Economy said the incident could indicate a shift in operational patterns rather than an isolated flight, including comments from Chieh Chung of the Association of Strategic Foresight that it should not be viewed as one-off activity.
