Syria prepares for postwar reconstruction as terrorism designation set to end
World Bank estimates put Syria’s rebuilding needs at US$216 billion, and lifting the terrorism designation would help unlock the financing Syria needs to start rebuilding infrastructure.
Syria’s government has taken steps toward building postwar state institutions, including establishing a supreme constitutional court on July 8 and convening a new national parliament four days later, according to reporting by SCMP Economy.
The move is occurring alongside a US policy shift. On July 8, Washington said it would lift Syria’s long-standing designation as a state sponsor of terrorism after a third face-to-face meeting between President Ahmed al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of a Nato summit in Ankara, SCMP Economy reported.
SCMP Economy said the impending removal of associated US sanctions could allow Syria to rejoin the global financial system, a prerequisite for reconstruction. After 14 years of civil war, the outlet noted Syria’s infrastructure is in ruins and its institutions are still forming.
The article cites World Bank estimates that Syria’s economy needs US$216 billion to rebuild, while pointing to the country’s strategic location between Asia and Europe as a potential trade advantage as rebuilding begins.
