Shenzhen vocational students turn to short AI courses amid job fears
The expansion of AI in China is fueling demand for AI skills and pushing trainees to seek school networks with industry insiders as instructors and potential job leads.
South China Morning Post reports that five years after graduating from a vocational school in Shenzhen, 26-year-old Chen Hao found himself working as a salesman for a local electronics factory, with a daily routine of client visits and no pay increases for years.
He quit and has been looking at short-term AI courses at local technical colleges, though he remains undecided because the coursework is not the main draw, he said, noting that AI skills can be learned online.
Instead, Chen is focused on whether training programs can connect him with industry insiders, who often act as instructors, and help lead to a job, according to the report.
The outlet links the growing interest in AI-focused vocational training to China’s rapid AI rollout, which has also heightened job-loss fears and increased demand for workers with AI skills.
