Trump tells White House press corps to press on at gala
The rescheduled dinner at the Waldorf Astoria also confirmed Benjamin Netanyahu would visit the United States next week and said the US is “doing well” in the Iran war.
South China Morning Post reports that US President Donald Trump told the White House press corps at the annual gala dinner, “the show must go on,” three months after an earlier attempt was interrupted by an assassination attempt. The outlet says security was stepped up and fewer journalists attended the rescheduled event at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, with the mood described as significantly different.
In a speech lasting almost an hour, Trump mixed jokes with remarks that included boasts about new “bulletproof” White House ballrooms and attacks on prominent Democrats, including California governor Gavin Newsom, the report adds. He also drew more attention to his ongoing media criticism, according to SCMP Economy.
On foreign policy, Trump addressed the war against Iran briefly and told the 700 guests that the Islamic Republic had little military capacity left. SCMP Economy also reports that he said Iran was “talking to us” and that negotiations would be possible only if Iran could not obtain a nuclear weapon.
Trump, according to the report, confirmed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would visit the United States next week, though he provided limited additional detail on other international relations during the event.
