Xinjiang draws Hong Kong students as travel push expands tour options

Hong Kong student Angel Lau Yin-kwan, 16, has become one of the latest visitors looking to Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, taking part in a seven-day northern Xinjiang learning tour in early July under the Solar Project organized by public broadcaster RTHK, according to SCMP Economy.
Lau said she previously pictured Xinjiang mainly as grassland with locals riding horses, but was surprised by infrastructure including a 700-metre-long Guozigou Bridge suspended 200 metres above a valley, and by views of Sayram Lake, which the article describes as Xinjiang’s highest and largest alpine lake.
During the trip, she also participated in a leather keychain-making activity tied to the region’s leather carving heritage, and told SCMP Economy she wants more time to study Xinjiang’s history and architecture beyond what a short visit can cover.
SCMP Economy adds that Xinjiang is emerging as a newer mainland destination for Hong Kong travelers, as tourism sector leaders seek to draw more visitors and students to the region’s scenery and culture.
