Journal reviews disputed Hong Kong map after university researcher claim

The publisher said its review of the paper is ongoing, while the Hong Kong Education University defended the map as a boundary based cartographic choice.

An international journal said it is reviewing concerns about a map included in a paper by a researcher at the Education University of Hong Kong, where Victoria Harbour was omitted and the Kowloon Peninsula was shown merged with Hong Kong Island. The outlet said it is still assessing the issue.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Communications journal indicated its assessment is ongoing, according to a spokesman. Separately, the Education University of Hong Kong defended the map, saying it was not a distortion or an error but a cartographic characteristic based on administrative boundaries rather than land outline or coastline data.

The paper was published in July last year and the researcher criticized the included map as highly absurd and severely flawed, according to the report.
