Thailand adds Phra Mahathat monastery to UNESCO World Heritage List

The inscription makes the monastery Thailand’s first World Heritage site in the southern region, and the government said it will support conservation and sustainable management.

Thailand has added Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, also known as the Phra Mahathat monastery, to the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Thai foreign ministry said on Sunday, according to SCMP Economy.

The temple is located in Nakhon Si Thammarat province and is now Thailand’s ninth World Heritage site, but its first in the nation’s southern region.

The ministry said the inscription is expected to strengthen cooperation at national and local levels on conservation, protection, and sustainable management of the site.

UNESCO describes the monastery as having served as a major regional Buddhist centre since its founding in the 8th century, and the property includes features such as a tall stupa, a reclining Buddha statue, and gilded Buddha monuments.
