Trump pardon brings Honduran ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez home

Hernandez returned after a US court convicted him in 2024 of helping smuggle hundreds of tons of drugs into the United States.

Honduran ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez returned home on Sunday after being pardoned by US President Donald Trump for drug trafficking, according to Agence France-Presse as carried by SCMP Economy.

Hernandez arrived on a private flight at Palmerola Airport near Tegucigalpa and was greeted by family and supporters, including a banner thanking Trump, AFP journalists observed.

Hernandez led Honduras from 2014 to 2022 before being extradited after leaving office by President Xiomara Castro to face US drug trafficking charges.

A US court found him guilty in 2024 of helping smuggle hundreds of tons of drugs into the United States and sentenced him to decades in prison, SCMP Economy reported.
