DOE approves nuclear safety design agreement for molten salt reactor

The agreement clears a key step for a molten salt reactor under development at Abilene Christian University in Texas.

The U.S. Department of Energy approved a Nuclear Safety Design Agreement for a molten salt reactor currently under development by researchers at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas, according to OilPrice.

The approval is described as a historic first for molten salt reactor advancement, as the project moves forward amid growing interest in round-the-clock clean power.

Molten salt reactors are presented as a next-generation nuclear technology that could address challenges associated with traditional nuclear power, including by using less fuel and producing shorter-lived radioactive waste, the Department of Energy says.

The outlet notes MSRs are also designed to be resource-efficient, with the ability to process fuel online, remove waste products, and add fresh fuel without lengthy refueling outages.
