V&A workers ballot for heatwave-related strike action over pay

The PCS says more than 300 workers across four London V&A sites are voting, as it pushes for heat protections including closing public areas above 30C and access to drinking water.

Workers at London’s V&A are balloting for strike action tied to heatwave conditions, alongside pay and workplace issues, the Guardian Business reports.

The Public and Commercial Services Union launched the ballot on 23 July over “serious and unresolved concerns” affecting staff at four V&A locations in London: the South Kensington museum, V&A East Museum and V&A East Storehouse in Stratford, and Young V&A in Bethnal Green.

The union is seeking a minimum 4% pay increase, and also wants heat mitigation steps, including a policy to close public areas across all four sites when temperatures exceed 30C.

PCS is further calling for back of house heat mitigation measures and for V&A East Storehouse staff to be able to carry and drink water while working near exhibits, while also urging the museum to become an accredited London living wage employer, which it notes is £14.80 an hour.
