China pledges US$4.5 million in Ebola emergency support for Africa

China has provided direct emergency support for the Ebola response in Africa, with Beijing’s aid reaching US$4.5 million after a handover certificate was signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in mid-July, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet reports that Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, met Jiang Feng, head of China’s mission to the African Union, and that a five-member Chinese medical team was already working in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
SCMP Economy frames the episode as a test of how quickly international solidarity can convert into money, equipment, and personnel on the ground as outbreaks unfold, saying disease control partnerships can become visible in real time.
