Coinbase CEO targets AI rebrands, backs Agentic Finance on-chain

Armstrong said Coinbase plans to use its x402 protocol, the Base blockchain, and USDC stablecoin to help AI agents trade, spend, and accept payments in real time.

CoinDesk reports Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong criticized a growing trend in crypto where firms move away from their blockchain roots to rebrand as artificial intelligence companies. In his view, crypto should be treated as foundational infrastructure that complements AI, rather than directly competing with it.

Armstrong wrote on X that the “pivot to AI” framing reflects “zero-sum” thinking, arguing the relationship is an “and, not an or.” He compared crypto’s role to general-purpose infrastructure like electricity or the internet, saying it underpins the next major technology cycle.

CoinDesk also reports Armstrong described Coinbase’s goal of anchoring an emerging ecosystem he calls Agentic Finance, using the x402 protocol, Base blockchain, and Circle’s USDC stablecoin. He said the setup is intended to let AI agents trade, spend, and accept payments in real time.

The article notes supporters argue machine-speed finance will require overhauling the broader tech stack, while critics warn that giving autonomous software agents direct control over capital without proven safeguards creates financial risk. CoinDesk adds that the plan reflects expectations that AI agents could execute far more daily transactions than humans, using crypto rails that can operate without relying on slower traditional banking processes.
