Eisenkot emerges as key challenger to Netanyahu before Israel election
A Channel 12 poll projected Eisenkot’s Yashar party at 23 seats versus Likud’s 22 in the 120-member Knesset, with voters also favoring Eisenkot as prime minister.
Israel is set to hold a general election on October 27, and the SCMP Economy reports that former military chief Gadi Eisenkot has emerged as the principal challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to a Channel 12 poll cited by the outlet, Eisenkot’s new party, Yashar, was projected to win 23 seats compared with Likud’s 22 seats in Israel’s 120-member Knesset.
The same survey found that 43 percent of respondents viewed Eisenkot, 66, as the most suitable candidate for prime minister, versus 34 percent for Netanyahu.
SCMP Economy also notes that Eisenkot has dismissed calls for a future Palestinian state as irrelevant after the October 7, 2023 attacks, and has built his campaign around a 10-point platform focused on restoring Israel’s security, unity, and democratic institutions.
