UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledges to reform social care fast

Burnham warned that delays in social care reform could push the NHS toward collapse as the system carries more demand.

Andy Burnham, the UK prime minister, said he plans to move quickly on reforming England’s social care system, telling the BBC he would use “whatever political capital I have” to address what he calls a broken system.

Burnham said he cannot set a timetable for the arrival of a new social care system, adding that creating it would take time, while arguing that without rapid action the NHS could collapse under the weight of care needs that otherwise might not end up in the NHS.

He linked social care reform to NHS performance goals, saying the spending on social care costs the NHS billions of pounds and that the UK will not return to good waiting time standards without fixing social care.

Burnham also said the country needs to become “really serious” about reducing spending on social security and other benefits, while saying he does not want to demonize people who claim those benefits.
