Nvidia eyes up to $250B OpenAI guarantee for Ohio data center plans
The proposed SoftBank-led Ohio facility would total 10 gigawatts of computing capacity, with the first 800-megawatt phase targeted for 2028, adding focus on how AI capex is financed and returns generated.
Nvidia is reported to be in early talks to provide financing guarantees of up to $250 billion to help OpenAI lease computing capacity from a planned $500 billion, 10-gigawatt data center facility in Ohio, according to OilPrice, citing Bloomberg and people familiar with the matter.
The project is described as SoftBank-led and would be among the world’s largest AI infrastructure hubs when fully built, with an 800-megawatt first phase targeted for 2028.
OilPrice said the potential backstop could help SoftBank secure financing while also supporting future demand for Nvidia’s chips, a structure that underscores concerns from investors about circular financing fueling the AI boom.
Against that backdrop, OilPrice noted traders are expected to focus on this week’s Big Tech earnings for signals on the trajectory of AI capital spending and whether those investments begin to generate adequate returns.
