Sberbank plans crypto wallet and infrastructure rollout by December
The plan includes a digital depository to track clients’ crypto rights and record off-blockchain transactions, alongside wallet transfers to execute orders.
Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, plans to build crypto infrastructure by December, according to a report by Interfax. The rollout includes a Bitcoin and crypto wallet plus digital asset custody.
Interfax said a key component will be a digital depository that tracks clients’ crypto rights and records off-blockchain transactions, while also handling wallet transfers to execute client orders.
The news comes as the State Duma considers a proposed law, “On Digital Currencies and Digital Rights,” aimed at creating comprehensive regulation for crypto in Russia. The proposal would cover retail purchases through licensed intermediaries, exchange trading, clearing, and digital depositories.
In the article, First Deputy Chairman Alexander Vedyakhin said regulators and the market still need to draft implementing regulations covering depository accounting, bookkeeping, and licensing for new types of intermediaries, with Sberbank indicating it will share expertise as the process develops. Bitcoin and crypto have been illegal in Russia as a form of payment since 2022, but lawmakers have discussed using digital assets for international settlements.
