Selective Insurance reports Q2 2026 net income of $127.1 million
Its combined ratio improved to 98% as catastrophe and non-catastrophe property losses declined.
Selective Insurance Group reported second-quarter 2026 net income of $127.1 million, up 52% from the same period a year earlier, while its combined ratio improved to 98%. The company attributed the profitability improvement to lower catastrophe and non-catastrophe property losses, including zero net prior year casualty reserve development.
Net premiums written decreased 5% year over year as Selective continued implementing rate and non-rate actions aimed at underwriting profitability. Standard Commercial Lines premiums fell 6%, with renewal pure price increases of 6.5%, and the line’s combined ratio improved to 99.3%, helped by zero net prior-year casualty reserve development and lower non-catastrophe property losses.
On the investment side, net investment income rose 18% year over year to $119 million after-tax, contributing 13.9 points of annualized return on equity in the quarter. Selective also reported an operating ROE of 13.7%, its eighth consecutive quarter of double-digit operating returns.
The company said it returned 45% of after-tax net income through its regular dividend and $32 million of share, with additional quarterly performance details by business line including declines in Standard Personal Lines and Excess and Surplus Lines premiums.
