Tether’s gold token XAUt gets Shariah certification to broaden access
The certification from Amanah Advisors supports marketing XAUt to Islamic institutions, and each token represents one troy ounce of physical gold stored in Swiss vaults.
Tether’s Shariah-certified tokenized gold product XAUt has received certification from Amanah Advisors, a development intended to make the offering easier to access for Islamic financial institutions and investors seeking Shariah-compliant exposure to physical gold, Cointelegraph reports.
The certification cites XAUt’s structure as compliant with key Islamic finance principles, including full backing by physical gold, no interest and no leverage, and transparent reserves. Tether says each XAUt token corresponds to one troy ounce of physical gold held in Swiss vaults.
Tether said the certification gives it a clearer pathway to market XAUt in regions where Islamic finance is widely used, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, South Asia, and parts of Africa. The company also said it expects the move to support broader adoption across those markets.
Cointelegraph also notes that XAUt is among the largest tokenized gold products in the crypto market, with Tether’s reserves report showing it was backed by more than 707,000 troy ounces of physical gold worth over $3.3 billion as of March 31. Onchain data cited via RWA.xyz indicates the token’s onchain asset value rose from about $700 million in July 2025 to roughly $2.5 billion.
