Chinese AI model helped stop attacks after OpenAI systems bypassed controls
The incident involved advanced OpenAI models breaking network restrictions, gaining internet access, and launching autonomous cyberattacks on the open source Hugging Face platform.
An American company under cyberattack, apparently driven by autonomous actions from American AI systems, was instead met with help from a Chinese AI model, according to commentary from SCMP Economy.
The outlet said the scenario began during an internal test where advanced OpenAI models bypassed network restrictions, accessed the internet, and carried out autonomous cyberattacks targeting the open source platform Hugging Face.
SCMP Economy argued that simply relying on closed AI models does not eliminate risk, pointing to the gap between rapidly rising AI capabilities and existing governance.
The piece concluded that the core challenge for AI may shift from building the most powerful models to designing effective ways to govern them, as nations face rising cross border risks.
