Hong Kong judge Wilson Chan eligible for early retirement benefits

His pension would be reduced proportionately because his early retirement would shorten his credited length of service, after experts said reputational damage and lost pay have already mounted.

Legal experts cited by SCMP Economy said that a Hong Kong judge found to have plagiarised submissions in his judgments has already faced major consequences, including reputational harm and tens of millions of dollars in forgone salary, allowances, and pension payouts.

SCMP Economy also reports that a judiciary spokesman confirmed Justice Wilson Chan Ka-shun would be eligible for early retirement benefits calculated according to his period of service. The spokesman added that Chan’s pension would be reduced proportionately because his length of service would be shorter than usual.

The chief executive, John Lee Ka-chiu, said he respected the chief justice’s decision to take action against Chan, SCMP Economy reported. The chief justice said Chan’s plagiarism adversely affected the interests of the parties concerned, added an unnecessary burden to appellate judicial resources, and undermined public confidence in his ability to discharge his duties.
