Japan issues tsunami alert after 7.1 earthquake

Japan issued a tsunami alert after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s southwest Tuesday, according to an update from Agence France-Presse.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the shaking reached the top level seven on the Japanese Shindo scale, with the quake occurring at 4:27 p.m. local time on the island of Kyushu.

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no immediate abnormalities at nuclear power plants.

Local utility Kyushu Electric Power said about 45,000 households and facilities lost power in the Kumamoto region.
