US diplomats walk out at UN during France remarks on human rights
The walkout came after the US opposed reappointing UN human rights chief Volker Turk for another four-year term, despite strong support including from France.
US diplomats walked out at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine on Monday as French representatives were speaking, after France criticized the Trump administration’s human rights record, Associated Press reports.
The move followed the United States opposing the reappointment of UN human rights chief Volker Turk for another four-year term, an appointment that received overwhelming support, including from France.
The walkout underscores strained US-France relations under President Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, with the article citing broader Europe tensions such as doubts over Trump’s commitment to Nato and potential changes to US troop deployments.
In remarks after the walkout, deputy US ambassador Dan Negrea accused France of “moral outrage” and said the US has backed France in conflicts where its “freedom has been imperilled,” but would not tolerate further lecturing, the outlet reports.
