Malaysia weighs tourism and stability as F1 race returns to Sepang

The Sepang event is scheduled for Oct. 2 to 4 and is expected to restore the season to 23 races after Middle East disruptions.

Malaysia is moving to host a one-off Formula One race at Sepang International Circuit, with the weekend of October 2 to 4 set to bring the sport back to the country after earlier decisions that F1 was too costly to sustain. South China Morning Post notes the timing is tied to disruptions in the Middle East, including a war in Iran and the cancellation of races previously planned for April in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

According to SCMP, analysts framed the Sepang race as more than a nostalgic return, saying it could provide a near-term tourism boost and an opportunity for Malaysia to position itself as a stable Southeast Asian base for global sporting events.

The report says Formula One will designate the event as the “Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia,” subject to final agreements and approval by the World Motor Sport Council. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said Sepang holds a special place in the sport’s history and would offer a setting for racing that fans can experience both at the circuit and worldwide.

SCMP adds that the Sepang race would restore the F1 season to 23 races following disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict.
