Brazil overtakes other countries as top importer of Chinese cars

Chinese car imports to Brazil reached US$5.2 billion in the first five months of this year, up 146.9% year over year, with electrified models driving most of the growth.

Brazil has become the world’s largest buyer of Chinese cars, overtaking Russia and Belgium in the first five months of the year, according to Chinese customs data cited by SCMP Economy.

The country imported US$5.2 billion worth of vehicles over that period, a 146.9% increase from US$2.1 billion a year earlier, while Russia bought US$5.0 billion and Belgium purchased US$3.8 billion.

Electrified models powered the surge, totaling US$4.5 billion of Brazil’s imports from China. The concentration in April and May contributed US$2.7 billion, consistent with stockpiling ahead of a July tariff increase rather than a purely sustained demand shift.

Brazil also ranked first for electric and hybrid vehicle imports specifically, with these models making up 87% of Brazil’s Chinese car imports last year, up from 33% in 2021. Data compiled by the Brazil-China Business Council also showed first-half purchases of US$5.35 billion, more than double the value of vehicles imported from France.
