CAF Bank suspends online services after suspected cyber fraud
The disruption began 24 July and affects charities that rely on the portal to run key operations like payroll, while the bank says its core banking system is not affected.
Charities across the South East say they may struggle to pay staff and suppliers after CAF Bank suspended its online banking portal following reports of suspected cyber fraud, according to BBC Business. The bank, based in West Malling, Kent, serves more than 14,000 non-profit causes UK-wide.
CAF Bank said its online services have been unavailable since 24 July. As a result, some charities reported interruptions to essential operations including payroll management, with Maidstone-based 21 Together describing the situation as “appalling.”
BBC Business reports that some charity leaders said they received little reassurance on timelines for restoration. Safer Communities Alliance’s chief executive said information from the bank was inconsistent and that there had been no clear reassurance about the current situation.
In a statement, CAF Bank chief executive Alison Taylor said the online banking service would remain unavailable until further notice. She added the bank is working with external experts to fix an issue tied to third-party software related to the online banking portal, and said the core bank is not affected.
