Chinese scientists question US and Iran war damage claims using satellite data
The analysis, published July 7 in The Innovation, argues that observed damage at US bases exceeds descriptions of “minimal damage” cited in US briefings.
Chinese scientists used detailed satellite imagery analysis to examine damage to US military bases in the Middle East, finding discrepancies between what Washington and Tehran have said about the conflict’s scale, according to a letter published in the peer reviewed journal The Innovation on July 7.
In the letter, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the scale of destruction indicates physical impacts they argue are larger than characterizations of “minimal damage” or “successful defence” that are commonly presented in US briefings.
The report also notes the US imposed “shutter control” measures on several commercial satellite providers, including California based Planet Labs, by suspending distribution of high resolution space imagery over conflict zones on April 4.
