DoorDash gets FAA approval for commercial drone deliveries
The FAA Part 135 certification lets DoorDash operate drones beyond visual line of sight, and it plans to launch its own service in fall.
DoorDash said it has received the approvals needed to run its own commercial drone delivery service, gaining Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 air carrier certification, according to Insurance Journal.
The approval enables operations beyond visual line of sight, and DoorDash said it has been testing the approach through pilot programs with restaurants, where some merchants saw order volume increase during the trial period.
DoorDash plans to launch its own drone deliveries in the fall and said the delivery device uses components primarily sourced from the United States. The company also plans to share further details at its annual product event in September.
Insurance Journal also notes that the move expands DoorDash’s in house robotics efforts aimed at reducing reliance on human couriers, whose wages are a key expense, and it targets faster delivery for orders from more remote locations where couriers may be less willing to travel.
