Hong Kong seizes 600kg of food and arrests 14 in hawker crackdown

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said 13 of those arrested were also charged with obstructing public places.

Hong Kong hygiene authorities arrested 14 people in a citywide crackdown on unlicensed hawkers and seized 600kg of food, some of it expired, according to SCMP Economy.

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department Chief Health Inspector Chan Sze-man said the suspects, aged 38 to 76, were arrested in multiple districts between July 17 and 28.

Chan said the department has long taken a “reasonable and compassionate” approach in cases involving elderly or people with disabilities, but it would not compromise on food safety.

SCMP Economy reported that 13 of the 14 arrests also led to charges for obstructing public places, and two additional charges were filed for selling restricted food without permission.
