Iran rejects Oman bid to share Strait of Hormuz lane control

Iran said it wants all inbound traffic into the Persian Gulf, and part of the outbound lanes, under Iranian control, after regional strikes pushed oil prices higher in early Wednesday trading.

Iran has rejected a proposal from Oman to evenly share control of shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior Iranian official cited by Reuters on Wednesday.

Oman’s plan, Reuters said, would have split control of the lanes evenly and introduced a voluntary fee from ships to fund navigation, environmental protection, and rescue operations, similar to the voluntary contribution system used in the Strait of Malacca.

The Iranian official said Tehran is seeking control of most of the critical oil and LNG chokepoint, with the U.S. and Saudi Arabia allegedly trying to pressure Oman into proposing what Iran described as “unrealistic plans.”

The rejection comes as strikes and attacks in the region resumed overnight, contributing to oil prices surging again early Wednesday in Asian trade, according to the report.
