Schwab renames $232M crypto equity ETF to highlight natural language processing

The ETF, STCE, kept the same ticker and 0.30% operating expense ratio, and it still targets crypto-connected equities rather than holding cryptocurrencies directly.

Schwab Asset Management has renamed its $232 million crypto-themed equity ETF, putting “natural language processing” in the fund name, even though it did not change the product’s ticker or its core economics. The ETF previously traded as the Schwab Crypto Thematic ETF, and it became the Schwab Crypto Thematic Natural Language Processing ETF on July 28, with the ticker still listed as STCE.

The fund remains an equity ETF, not a spot crypto fund. According to its filings, STCE invests in shares of companies linked to the crypto ecosystem rather than cryptocurrencies themselves, and its selection process scores company documents for relevance to crypto-related themes before applying screens and review.

Schwab’s 2026 summary prospectus continues to list the fund’s stated objective, its 0.30% annual operating expense ratio, and the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index described in the 2022 launch prospectus. The newer paperwork adds more detailed language about the NLP element, leaving open the possibility of adjustments to the index’s finer rules since the original launch.

As of July 27, the ETF reported $232.1 million in net assets and 42 holdings. The three largest positions at that snapshot were Bitcoin miner Bitdeer Technologies at 6.38%, miner CleanSpark at 5.46%, and Trump Media & Technology Group at 5.43%, illustrating that the fund’s exposure extends beyond miners and can be influenced indirectly by digital assets used or held by portfolio companies.

CryptoSlate reported that Schwab did not explain why the NLP wording was added four years after the ETF began using the technique to select and weight stocks, but it said the core mechanism traced back to the fund’s 2022 launch materials.
