US and Taiwan coastguards coordinate maritime drills as patrols expand
The US photo was released weeks after Beijing said its coastguard began routine law enforcement patrols east of Taiwan.
The United States released a rare image showing American and Taiwanese coastguards operating together at sea, as China expands maritime law enforcement in waters east of Taiwan.
The American Institute in Taiwan, the de facto US embassy in Taipei, posted the undated photo and said the two sides were coordinating on search and rescue, disaster relief, and maritime law enforcement cooperation.
The AIT said the United States appreciates Taiwan’s partnership in maritime security and safety, and it supports Taiwan’s contributions to exchange and international cooperation on maritime law enforcement, without directly mentioning Beijing.
Analysts cited in the report said the timing underscored Washington’s support for Taiwan, coming weeks after Beijing announced its coastguard had begun routine law enforcement patrols in the same area.
