US bans new foreign humanoid robot imports over national security risks

The restrictions also cover power inverters used in data centers and solar panels, added to the FCC Covered List, and they only apply to new, not previously authorized models.

The Trump administration announced a ban on new foreign-made humanoid robot imports into the United States, citing “unacceptable risks” to national security, with the rule applying to advanced humanoid and four-legged machines.

Separately, the Federal Communications Commission also banned imports of power inverters, devices used in data centres and solar panels, saying they could pose risks to the US economy, and added both categories to its Covered List of goods and services deemed national security threats.

The FCC ban does not block sales or imports of existing models that were previously authorized by the agency, and FCC chairman Brendan Carr said the move is intended to secure critical US supply chains.

China’s embassy in Washington said Beijing opposes the US “politicising” of trade and sanctions on “groundless pretexts,” adding that it would take “all necessary measures” in response, while urging international cooperation on AI.
