World Nuclear Association says $6 trillion is needed by 2050
The group estimates the plan implies about $250 billion in nuclear spending each year to reach 1,446 GWe capacity by 2050.
As nuclear energy gains traction in Europe and the United States amid energy security concerns and rising electricity demand, the World Nuclear Association said global investment is falling far short of what is needed to meet expansion goals.
In a report on Wednesday, the group said achieving governments’ target nuclear capacity of 1,446 GWe by 2050 would require around $6 trillion of investment over the next 25 years, equivalent to roughly $250 billion per year.
The World Nuclear Association cited a strengthening “strategic case” for nuclear power, but warned that mobilizing sufficient capital remains a core challenge.
The report also points to large buildout plans from China and India in coming decades and a policy reversal in Japan, which aims to increase nuclear’s share of electricity to about 20% by 2040, from below 10% now.
