Banco Santander discloses first spot Bitcoin and Ether ETF positions

Santander reported holding 129,615 shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust valued at $4.31 million and 297,947 shares of the iShares Ethereum Trust valued at $3.54 million as of June 30.

Banco Santander disclosed first-time spot crypto ETF exposure in a new 13F filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, marking a shift for one of Europe’s largest banks.

The filing shows 129,615 shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT, worth $4.31 million as of June 30, and 297,947 shares of the iShares Ethereum Trust worth $3.54 million. Santander also listed a $1.51 million position in the iShares Gold Trust.

Santander’s prior quarterly disclosure filed May 8 did not include either crypto ETF, and a full-text search of its SEC filings found no earlier Bitcoin ETF positions. The bank said the filings cover holdings managed by Santander and five affiliated managers.

The crypto ETFs represent a small slice of Santander’s reported U.S. equity book, with the combined Bitcoin and Ether holdings totaling roughly 0.05% across 929 line items, according to the filing. The 13F was signed by Ruben Navajo on July 28.
