China warned to guard against US underground warfare concepts

Chinese analysts said the scenario would challenge China’s defense strategy built around geographic depth and existing early-warning systems that rely on satellites, radars, and sensors.

Chinese think tanks have warned that the United States could be developing underground warfare capabilities and that Beijing should plan for the potential national security threat, according to a report cited by the South China Morning Post.

The analysis ties the idea to changing battlefield dynamics, saying drones and precision-guided weapons are increasing the strategic focus on subterranean space as a future dimension of conflict.

Anduril founder Palmer Luckey has promoted a concept called a subterrene, described as a vehicle that could move through the Earth’s crust similarly to how submarines navigate underwater.

The report from Guodong Think Tank said that if the concept materializes, it could create an unprecedented challenge to China’s defense strategy, which leans on geographic depth and natural terrain, by enabling an enemy to potentially bypass border regions through underground tunnels, undermining the usefulness of China’s early-warning systems that depend on satellites, ground-based radars, and signal sensors.
