Kerry warns Europe’s energy blind spot is a national security risk
In an op-ed, Kerry said energy prices over the past four years have done more damage to Europe than any kinetic weapon, including shuttering factories and driving inflation.
Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned that Europe’s failure to fully recognize energy insecurity is creating national security vulnerabilities, according to an OilPrice article summarizing his comments and op-ed. Kerry argued that NATO’s summit in Ankara, Türkiye, this month showed cohesion and cooperation amid conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran, but included almost no mention of the energy crises those wars have intensified. In his Semafor op-ed, Kerry said energy insecurity poses a bigger danger to Europe than any military operation, warning that ignoring it could amount to an “exposed flank” in Europe’s rearmament. He noted that while NATO members pledged billions for defense expenditures and planned steps to strengthen alliance cohesion and military capability, the summit declaration included only a single reference to energy security.
