Kerry warns Europe’s energy insecurity is a national security risk

Kerry argues energy prices have caused more damage in the past four years than “any kinetic weapon,” contributing to factory shutdowns, inflation, and an estimated €650 billion in household and business support costs.

Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned that Europe’s energy insecurity poses national security vulnerabilities, saying a failure to fully acknowledge it could leave Europe with an “exposed flank” as it rearms.

In an op-ed published by Semafor, Kerry said the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye showed commitment to cohesion amid conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran, but the summit declaration contained only one reference to energy security, which he described as a strategic blind spot.

Kerry wrote that over the past four years, energy prices have caused more harm to Europe than any military action, including shuttering factories in Germany’s industrial heartland and driving inflation that he said helped topple governments.

He added that European taxpayers have spent roughly €650 billion shielding households and businesses from cost of living crises, framing energy insecurity as a greater danger than the military operations related to those conflicts.
