Previsico brings property flood forecasting to South Africa

The rollout is backed by a grant from the InsuResilience Investment Fund, with warnings for individual properties up to 48 hours ahead.

UK flood intelligence specialist Previsico said it is entering Africa, starting with South Africa, as part of its international expansion of property level flood forecasting technology.

The company said the initiative will be supported by a grant from the InsuResilience Investment Fund, managed by Blue Orchard Finance Ltd, and targets regions with limited access to advanced insurance and risk management tools.

Previsico builds its flood forecasts using proprietary live hydrodynamic modelling, which it says combines high resolution LiDAR data, drainage network information, land use mapping and real time weather data, validated by an Internet of Things sensor network.

The system is designed to issue flood warnings for individual properties up to 48 hours before an event, and Previsico said phase one of its South African programme was completed in the first half of 2026 with proof of concept projects in Durban, while a second phase launched this month to extend coverage to the Cape, Johannesburg and other higher risk locations.
