QatarEnergy buys up to 33 U.S. LNG cargoes to offset Iran war strain

The spot purchases, including deliveries to Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, and Taiwan, already include 28 cargoes delivered, with five still en route, according to Reuters citing Kpler data.

Qatar’s state-owned QatarEnergy has bought on the spot market as many as 33 cargoes of LNG from the United States this year for shipments to Asia, aiming to reduce the impact of stranded supplies tied to the Iran war, Reuters reported, citing industry and trade sources.

The volume of U.S. spot purchases in 2026 far exceeds QatarEnergy’s U.S. spot buying last year, when it took only four U.S. cargoes. Reuters’ sources said the cargoes were reportedly sourced directly from U.S. producer and exporter Venture Global.

QatarEnergy has faced constrained domestic production and exports after Iranian missile attacks damaged facilities and after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters said the spot cargoes are intended for buyers in Japan, South Korea, India, Bangladesh, and Taiwan.

Of the 33 U.S. LNG cargoes, Reuters cited Kpler data showing 28 have already been delivered, with the remaining five traveling to South Korea, Taiwan, and India. Reuters also noted that QatarEnergy declared force majeure on LNG deliveries early in the conflict after damage to its Ras Laffan liquefaction complex.
