Chile’s president meets China’s ambassador amid forced labor export tariff
The U.S. opened a window on June 3 for Chile to argue for changes tied to the forced labor tariff, and Santiago said it will keep engaging Washington to improve market access.
Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast met China’s ambassador to Santiago, Niu Qingbao, at the La Moneda Palace on Friday morning, a meeting that lasted more than an hour and was the first between the two since Kast took office in March, according to Chile’s presidency.
The meeting comes as the U.S. moves to impose a forced labor related tariff on exports, after the USTR first proposed the measure on June 3, prompting Chile’s foreign ministry and export associations to prepare their case.
Chile said in a statement that it will continue talking with the Trump administration to improve access conditions, including seeking exclusions for products it views as essential to the country’s export basket.
SCMP Economy reported that the discussion between Kast and the ambassador also involved Chile’s foreign minister, Francisco Perez Mackenna, and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Patricio T.
