Liberty Mutual venture arm joins Antora’s $550 million Series C

Antora, which makes thermal batteries that store electricity as heat in solid carbon blocks, says it moved a 5 GWh system at a South Dakota facility into energy delivery in under 12 months.

Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures has joined Antora Energy’s $550 million Series C funding round, according to Coverager. The round includes participation from investors such as Ribbit Capital, Salesforce Ventures, Activate Capital, John Doerr, Westly Group and StepStone Group.

Antora builds thermal batteries that store electricity as heat in solid carbon blocks and later discharge that heat to industrial customers or convert it back into power. The company targets industrial users and data centers, emphasizing a system that it says does not rely on critical minerals and can be deployed relatively quickly.

Coverager reports that Antora recently brought a 5 GWh energy storage system online at POET’s bioprocessing facility in Big Stone City, South Dakota, moving from construction to energy delivery in under 12 months. The new funding is intended to support additional deployments, a second U.S. manufacturing hub, and supply-chain expansion.

The report adds that Antora’s San Jose factory has expanded into a three-building campus, and that the facility is among the larger battery manufacturing operations in the United States.
