Mercury Insurance lists 10 cheapest 2026 trucks and SUVs to insure
The insurer’s internal analysis of insurance costs for 2025 to 2027 model years says factors like repair complexity, parts availability, theft frequency, and safety systems shape the premiums.
Mercury Insurance has released annual rankings of the 10 most affordable new 2026 model year trucks and SUVs to insure, positioning the list as another data point for shoppers weighing vehicle price, fuel economy, and safety ratings before purchase.
On the truck side, the Chevrolet Colorado LT took the top spot, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado C3500. The remaining entries were the Ford Maverick and Ranger, Hyundai Santa Cruz SE, Toyota Tundra CrewMax, Ford F-150, Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-350 Super Duty, Dodge/Ram 1500, and GMC Canyon Denali, covering both compact and full-size models rather than focusing on a single segment.
Mercury said its rankings reflect internal analysis of insurance costs for 2025 to 2027 model year trucks, with premiums influenced by repair complexity, replacement part availability, theft frequency, and safety systems, alongside purchase price. Chong Gao, director of R&D at Mercury Insurance, said insurance costs should be considered alongside towing capacity, payload, and performance because insurance is part of total cost of ownership.
For SUVs, the Hyundai Santa Fe led Mercury’s list, ahead of the Chevrolet Blazer and Honda Pilot, with the remaining models including the Kia Sportage, Honda Passport, Ford Escape, Kia Soul, Honda HR-V, Honda CR-V, and Kia Sorento. Mercury also pointed to Highway Loss Data Institute findings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety on how comprehensive coverage losses, including theft, tend to rise with vehicle size and how theft losses are typically lower for cheaper, less sought-after models, and it noted that requesting an insurance quote before signing paperwork can help avoid unexpected costs.
