Singapore ministers win $113,000 each in legal costs from Bloomberg

The court ordered Bloomberg and journalist Low De Wei to pay S$230,000 in damages to each minister, with costs split across pre-trial, trial, and post-trial work.

Singapore’s Senior Minister K. Shanmugam and Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry) Tan See Leng were each awarded S$145,000 (US$113,000) in legal costs after their defamation suit against Bloomberg and its journalist Low De Wei, according to SCMP Economy. The ruling followed a court decision earlier in the month that found a December 2024 Bloomberg article about Good Class Bungalow transactions defamed the ministers. Bloomberg and its reporter were ordered to pay S$230,000 in damages to each minister, the outlet reported. The shared extract of the notes of proceedings also laid out how the legal costs were calculated, with S$50,000 for pre-trial work, S$65,000 for the trial, and S$30,000 for post-trial work for each minister. The underlying article had referenced a S$3 billion money laundering scandal and said buyers of high-end homes preferred to keep purchases under the radar, SCMP Economy added.
