Hong Kong unemployment holds at 3.7% in May-to-July period

Underemployment rose to 1.7% from 1.6% as labour force and employment increased further, according to Hong Kong statistics.

Hong Kong’s jobless rate was unchanged since the start of 2026, holding at 3.7% for the May-to-July period, according to new figures from the Census and Statistics Department, as reported by SCMP Economy.

Authorities said the economy was growing fast enough to support the job market, even as the labour chief warned that unemployment pressure could rise as fresh graduates enter the workforce.

The labour department also reported that the underemployment rate increased to 1.7%, up from 1.6% in the April-to-June period.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk-han said that over the same period, both the labour force and total employment increased further.
